Sachsenhausen concentration camp

Built by prisoners in 1936 north of Berlin, Sachsenhausen was laid out as a model camp, and from 1938 the SS office that ran the whole camp system sat beside it. More than 200,000 people were held there, from political opponents and Jews to Soviet prisoners of war, and tens of thousands died. After liberation the Soviets used it as a special camp until 1950.
