Weeks after liberation, on the night of 30 May 1945, Czech authorities drove some 18,000 German-speaking residents of Brno, mostly women, children and old people, south toward the Austrian border on foot. Many were held in a camp at Pohořelice, where dysentery spread. Estimates of the dead run from under a thousand to several thousand. In 2015 Brno's council formally expressed regret.
