After the 1992 elections the Czech and Slovak leaders, Václav Klaus and Vladimír Mečiar, could not agree on a shared state. On 26 August 1992 they met at Brno's Villa Tugendhat and signed the document dividing the country, and Czechoslovakia split peacefully into two republics on 1 January 1993. The villa, a 1930 modernist house by Mies van der Rohe, is a World Heritage site.
