The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal as a tomb for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth in 1631. Thousands of craftsmen worked on the white marble mausoleum, its inlaid stonework and its gardens beside the Yamuna. Deposed by his son Aurangzeb in 1658, Shah Jahan spent his last years confined in Agra Fort, within sight of it.
