After Muhammad of Ghor defeated Prithviraj Chauhan in 1192, his general Qutb ud-din Aibak began Delhi's first mosque, from the stone of demolished temples, and the Qutb Minar beside it. His successor Iltutmish finished the tower and made Delhi the capital of a sultanate. Iltutmish's daughter Razia ruled from 1236 to 1240, the only woman to rule the Delhi Sultanate, until nobles deposed her; she was killed months later trying to regain the throne.
