Indian soldiers of the East India Company's army mutinied at Meerut and marched to Delhi, proclaiming the aged Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar their leader. Revolt spread across northern India until British forces stormed Delhi after a long siege and recaptured Lucknow and Kanpur. Britain abolished Company rule and governed India directly from 1858.
