José Rizal, a doctor and novelist whose books exposed abuses under Spanish rule, was shot by firing squad at Bagumbayan field in Manila after a military trial linked him to the revolution that had broken out that August. His death strengthened the independence movement. He spent his last days in a cell at Fort Santiago, where brass footprints trace his walk to execution.
