US and Filipino forces held the Bataan peninsula for three months against the Japanese before surrendering in April 1942. About 75,000 prisoners were forced to march to Camp O'Donnell, and thousands died on the way. Corregidor, the island fortress guarding Manila Bay, fell in May. Its ruined barracks and gun batteries are preserved as a memorial.
