As the Spanish-American War broke Spain's hold on the islands, General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed Philippine independence from a window of his house in Kawit, Cavite, where the national flag was first unfurled and the anthem first played. A revolutionary congress at Malolos produced a republic in January 1899, but the United States, which bought the islands from Spain, crushed it in a three-year war.
