Karl Marx was born in Trier in 1818 into a family of rabbis; his father had converted to keep practising law under Prussian rule. Marx grew up and went to school in the town before leaving for university in 1835. His later writings, above all The Communist Manifesto and Capital, inspired labour movements and the communist states of the twentieth century. His birthplace is now a museum.
