On a passenger boat moored at Schengen, where Luxembourg meets France and Germany on the Moselle, five neighbouring states agreed in 1985 to phase out checks at their shared borders. The implementing convention took effect in 1995, and the Schengen Area now lets several hundred million people cross most of Europe's internal frontiers without showing a passport. A museum stands on the quay.
