In Courtroom 600 of Nuremberg's Palace of Justice, an International Military Tribunal set up by the four Allied powers tried 22 leading Nazis for crimes against peace, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Twelve were sentenced to death. The trials established that individuals can be held responsible for crimes of state and laid foundations for international criminal law.
