At a parliament held in Lublin in 1569, after months of hard bargaining, Polish and Lithuanian nobles turned a union under a shared king into a single Commonwealth with one elected monarch and one parliament. The king sealed the act at Lublin Castle. The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth became one of Europe's largest states and lasted until the partitions of 1795.
