Yeshiva of the Sages of Lublin and Jewish Lublin

Lublin's Jews, about a third of the city before 1939, had made it a centre of learning since the sixteenth century, when the Council of Four Lands met at its fairs. In 1930 Rabbi Meir Shapiro opened the Yeshiva Chachmei Lublin, a purpose-built academy with lecture hall, dormitory and library. The Germans destroyed the Jewish quarter below the castle; the yeshiva building survives.
