Run from Lublin by the SS officer Odilo Globocnik, Operation Reinhard murdered about 1.7 million Jews, most of them from occupied Poland, in the death camps of Bełżec, Sobibór and Treblinka. Victims were gassed within hours of arrival. On 14 October 1943 prisoners at Sobibór rose up and some 300 broke out, after which the camps were razed and disguised as farms.
