In a rubber plantation east of the Australian base at Nui Dat, 108 men of D Company, 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, ran into a much larger Viet Cong force in a monsoon downpour. Saved by massed artillery and armoured carriers that arrived at dusk, they lost 18 killed. It was the heaviest Australian loss in a single action of the war and is remembered each 18 August.
