North-west of Saigon, communist fighters dug a network of tunnels that grew to well over 100 km, first against the French and then against American and South Vietnamese forces. Hiding kitchens, command rooms and field hospitals, it survived bombing and sweeps such as Operation Crimp in 1966 and served as a base for the 1968 Tet attacks on the city.
