North Vietnamese tanks broke through the gates of the Independence Palace in Saigon on 30 April 1975, ending the Vietnam War. In the days before, US helicopters evacuated thousands of Americans and Vietnamese from the city. Vietnam was formally reunified in 1976, and Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City.
