Cao Đài was proclaimed in 1926 in French Cochinchina by Vietnamese officials who held séances, and it blended Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and Christianity under a single God, with saints including Victor Hugo and Sun Yat-sen. Within years it counted hundreds of thousands of followers and later fielded its own army. Its Holy See at Tây Ninh still holds daily ceremonies.
