Princess Isabel, acting for her father Emperor Pedro II, signed the Lei Áurea at the Paço Imperial, freeing the roughly 700,000 people still enslaved. Brazil was the last country in the Americas to abolish slavery, after decades of resistance by enslaved people and a mass abolitionist campaign. The freed received no land or compensation, and the monarchy fell to a republican coup the next year.
