In November 1910 some 2,000 sailors, mostly Black or of mixed race, seized four warships in Guanabara Bay and trained their guns on Rio, demanding an end to naval flogging 22 years after slavery was abolished. Led by João Cândido, they won an amnesty and the end of the lash, but many were later jailed or deported, and more than a dozen died in a cell on Ilha das Cobras.
