Fleeing Napoleon's invasion of Portugal, Prince Regent João and thousands of courtiers sailed to Brazil under British escort and made Rio de Janeiro the capital of the Portuguese Empire. They opened Brazil's ports, founded a royal library and botanic garden, and raised Brazil to a kingdom. When João returned to Lisbon in 1821, his son Pedro stayed and declared Brazil independent in 1822.
